Weiss receives Wal-Mart Teacher of Year award
BISMARCK — Bismarck third grade teacher Dora Weiss had some visitors in her classroom Tuesday morning.
Farmington Wal-Mart Supercenter Store Manager Rob Thomas along with other representatives of Wal-Mart presented Weiss with the Farmington Wal-Mart Supercenter Teacher of the Year award.
“This is an absolute big, nice surprise,” said Weiss. “I was at home sick the day my principal found out I was receiving the honor. My principal called me at home and told me he had some news that might make me feel better.”
Weiss was presented a check for $1,000 that can be used in any way to benefit her classroom. However, the $1,000 check wasn’t what made her students excited.
“The kids were excited because Mr. Thomas and Wal-Mart brought a cake with them that everybody got to eat,” said Weiss. “I’ve started a list that is two pages long with things that I am going to use the money on. I want to put some thought into it. I’m glad it’s not a shopping spree.”
Weiss said the mother of one of her students nominated her for the honor. She said one of the keys to being a good teacher is being able to adapt.
“You definitely have to love your students,” said Weiss. “You have to always be willing to use new ideas and be very flexible.”
