Ceiling tiles fall, three people receive injuries

FARMINGTON – Three people received minor injuries when pieces of ceiling tile fell down at a restaurant in Farmington Friday.

According to the Farmington Fire Department, two children and an adult received very minor injuries while eating at El Tapatio Mexican Restaurant just before noon Friday. The three individuals were taken by private conveyance to a local hospital.

According to the Farmington Fire Department, there had previously been water damage to the plaster ceiling which collapsed Friday, bringing down the plaster, ceiling tile and insulation.

Alonzo Lara, manager of the restaurant, at first said he planned to shut down just the room where the three tiles fell. Lara said he hoped to keep the non-smoking section and the back room open for New Year’s Eve.

A county health inspector was contacted to inspect the restaurant after the ceiling collapse. A fire official said after meeting with the inspector, the restaurant owners decided to voluntarily shut down until an engineer could come in and look at the building.
