Arts Council sponsors Big Band Dinner Dance

The Mineral Area Council on the Arts will host the Gate Way City Big Band Dinner Dance April 29 in The Factory in Farmington. This is a postponement from an earlier announced date.

The event will be in the newly refurbished banquet area called “Alexander’s.” An elevator is available to take diners to the upper level.

The cost of tickets is $30 and they may be purchased at Botaniques on the Square, The Factory or by calling Betty Schaper at 518-2125. Doors open at 6 p.m. with a buffet dinner at 7 p.m. and the band will play from 8 until 11 p.m.

The Gateway City Big Band members are from various walks of life and play swing and big band music for their own enjoyment as well as the enjoyment of others. The smartly-attired, 19-piece group includes conductor Steve Robinson, who is a former MAC student who has played with Bob Kuban and several St. Louis area chamber ensembles and orchestras.

Karen Kelly plays trombone and serves as the band’s “girl singer.” She said band members have developed long-time relationships in the Parkland, either through work, family or just from visiting the various parks and festivals here.

The Gateway City Big Band Dinner Dance benefits the Arts Council. Financial assistance for the band’s appearance comes in part from the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
