Rep. Steve Tilley co-sponsors bill for armed services personnel

106th District Representative Dr. Steven Tilley, R-Perryville, has signed on as a co-sponsor of HB 699, which will exempt military personnel serving in a combat zone from state income taxes.

“Our community has seen first hand the sacrifice men and women make for our country,” said Rep. Tilley. “I believe this bill takes a first step in easing the financial burden that their families face during trying times.”

HB 699 would exempt all income earned for military service in a combat zone from Missouri state income taxes beginning with the tax year January 1, 2005. This legislation would be similar to federal legislation, which exempts military personnel from paying federal income taxes on money they earn while serving in a combat zone.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Jim Avery, R-Crestwood, recently returned to the Missouri House of Representatives after serving 13 months in Iraq as a combat engineer with the 1140th Engineering Battalion of the Missouri National Guard in Farmington.

“This bill also shows our deepest gratitude for their hard work and sacrifice for our country,” said Tilley.
