Police capture escapee from mental health center

FARMINGTON – An escapee from the Southeast Missouri Mental Health Center was apprehended Monday evening after being on the loose for just 30 minutes.

According to Farmington Police Chief Rick Baker, a 41-year-old Bonne Terre man escaped from the mental health center at approximately 6:45 p.m. through an admissions entrance.

“The man was on a 96-hour court ordered commitment to the mental health center,” Baker said. “When we arrived at the mental health center we first did a search around the grounds and could not find the escapee. The mental health center then told us that they had gotten information that the man was at an apartment on Hyler Drive.”

Baker said a resident at the apartment complex indicated he was familiar with the escapee.

“We took the escapee back into custody without incident,” Baker said. “As far as I know he is back at the Southeast Missouri Mental Health Center.”

Baker said he would be filing a report with St. Francois County Prosecuting Attorney Wendy Wexler Horn to see if charges could be filed against the escapee. Baker said charges would not be filed against the resident of the apartment complex on Hyler Drive.
