FHS Match Club has a successful year

The Fredericktown High School Math Club brought home several awards from Math Field Day. Math Field Day was held on April 28 on the Southeast Missouri State University campus. FHS was one of 25 schools in the competition taking 26 students to the competition. All students competed in at least two events with several students competing in as many as 4 events. The exams are extremely difficult covering subjects from Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Calculus, and several problem solving events. They are given only 20 minutes to complete their exam which may have as many as 25 questions that must be worked without multiple choice answers. “Our students did a great job at Math Field Day. They worked very hard to prepare and we placed in several events. Fredericktown competes in the Large School Division and I am extremely proud of the accomplishments of our students especially when they are competing against schools twice our size,” states Gayla Singleton, sponsor of the Math Club. Medals are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in 30 events. FHS brought home 8 individual medals and 3 team medals with only two schools placing in more events.

The Math Club entered 24 individual events and 5 team events. For the first time, the Mathletics Team took First Place out of 20 schools competing in this event. Four students work together on challenging problems with a time limit for each question. The Medley Team took second place. This event requires a student from each class (grades 9-12) take the same exam with questions from all mathematics subjects. The Algebra II team placed third taking an exam on Algebra II topics.
