Over $1 million in unclaimed property

JEFFERSON CITY – Rep. Brad Robinson, D-Bonne Terre, recently received a list from the state treasurer that says there is over $1 million dollars of unclaimed property in St. Francois County.

Robinson was notified by State Treasurer Sarah Steelman that over $1,141,710.58 of unclaimed property belongs to 13,722 residents that reside in the 107th District.

“I was amazed at the size of the list,” Robinson said. “We requested this list from the state treasurer. This is a tool for our residents to see if they have anything out there.”

Robinson said the list included unclaimed property that is over $50.

“In includes money from insurance policies, safe deposit boxes or governmental agencies that have simply been forgotten or abandoned by the original owner,” Robinson said. “I strongly encourage residents to go online at www.showmemoney.com to see if their name is in the database. If you find your name, follow the directions, they will include proving your identity and proof of ownership.”

Robinson said there is no time limit for filing claims in some cases, such as those in which property was from an interest-bearing account, the state will pay up to seven years interest on cash property.

“Each year approximately $20 million are returned to the citizens or their heirs and currently the state is holding approximately $300 million that belongs to approximately 1.5 million Missourians,” Robinson said. “If you have trouble accessing the information from the website feel free to call my office at (573) 751-2317. We will do everything that we can to help.”
