Richard Lea

STE. GENEVIEVE – Richard Rutledge Lee, 72, died May 27 in Houston, Texas, with his beloved wife Maureen and his loved ones by his side. He was born Aug. 4, 1932, in Tucson, Arizona and was the son of Dr. Richard S. Lea of Festus and Angela England Smith of Hialeah, Florida.

He is survived by his wife Maureen (Norris) Lea, Ste. Genevieve; sons: Kevin S. Lea and wife Janet (Armbruster) Lea of Bethlehem, Penn., David C. Lea of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughters: Patricia E. (Limbaugh) Holt and husband Robert, Ste. Genevieve, Mickey J. (Limbaugh) Carroll and husband Mike of Sugar Land, Texas, and daughter-in-law, Diane (Naeger) Limbaugh, Ste. Genevieve. He is also survived by brother, Hart Lea, Boise, Idaho; sister, Nancy Lea, Festus. In addition, Richard enjoyed 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons: Michael Wayne Lea of Dahlonega, Ga., Clifford E. (Butch) Limbaugh, Ste. Genevieve; granddaughter, Shelly Nicole Lea, Illinois.

Richard served in the Ste. Genevieve Police Department form 1963 to 1986, ten of those years serving as Chief of Police. Richard then joined the Ste. Genevieve Sheriff’s Department in 1986, where he served as Chief Deputy for eight years and later retired. After retirement Richard owned and operated the L&L Lock Shop. He served in the United States Coast Guard from 1950 to 1952. He was a member of the American Federation of Chiefs of Police and served one year as Vice President. Furthermore, he was a member of the National Rifle Association, American Legion and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation will be at Basler Funeral Home, Ste. Genevieve Friday, June 17 from 4-8 p.m. Services will be held at the Basler Chapel 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18 with Rev. James Hanson officiating. Burial will be at Valle Spring Cemetery, Ste. Genevieve.
