HospiceCare presents certificate

Representative Brad Robinson was recently presented a certificate of appreciation by HospiceCare Executive Director, Fred McDaniel. McDaniel praised the legislator for his work to successfully reinstate funding for the Medicaid Hospice Benefit to the state budget.

“We wanted to do something to let him know that we appreciated his support during the last few months”, said McDaniel. “His efforts in getting the benefit put back in the budget means Missourians will continue to have the right to die at peace, without pain, and with dignity.”

After Governor Blunt’s decision to eliminate funding for the hospice Medicaid benefit in the state budget, a massive letter-writing campaign was organized by staff, patients, families, board and volunteers at HospiceCare. More than 200 letters, faxes and e-mails were sent to legislators asking that they work hard to get the benefit reinstated.

“This was just too important of an issue to remain silent,” said McDaniel. “We were pleased that Representative Robinson got immediately involved and went to bat for us from day one.”

Robinson pledged to oppose any and all cuts to the hospice benefit and even responded with hand-written letters to everyone who wrote him. “As the husband of a nurse, I know that hospice is a wonderful and worthy benefit to those who need it. I will always oppose any cuts to those services.”

HospiceCare, Inc. serves St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Washington, Madison, Perry, Iron, Reynolds and Jefferson counties.  It is the oldest and only not-for-profit hospice in the area and is governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors who are community leaders of this area. HospiceCare offices are located on the campus of the Mineral Area College.
