Local prison employee faces charges

FARMINGTON – A Farmington Correctional Center employee is in trouble for allegedly having sexual contact with an inmate.

Mildred A. Schmidt-Knorr, 57, of Farmington, was charged Friday with two counts of sexual contact with an inmate. The charges were filed by the St. Francois County prosecutor’s office in associate circuit court.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Patrick King said he believes Schmidt-Knorr worked in a treatment center which is on the property of the correctional center.

The contact allegedly occurred in December and January with the same inmate.

According to a probable cause statement written by a Farmington Correctional Center investigator, evidence was obtained from audio recordings, written documentation and an admission from an inmate that on two separate occasions the employee engaged in deviate sexual intercourse with the inmate.

Schmidt-Knorr was arrested on a $20,000 cash-only bond. The charge carries a sentence of one to four years and a fine of up to $5,000.
