Median crossover on U.S. 67 closes

SIKESTON – Motorists are being alerted by the Missouri Department of Transportation that the median crossover on U.S. 67 at Rosener Road and Commonwealth Drive in Park Hills will be closed to traffic as of Monday morning.

In a statement issued Wednesday, MoDOT also said the highway will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction as the final stages of construction on that project are carried out by the contractor, R.L. Persons Construction. The change in the traffic pattern will be initiated at 7 a.m. Monday.

Matt Malone, resident engineer for MoDOT, explained the lane reductions are necessary as the contractor saws and removes the shoulder and also performs grading along the highway. This work is being done in preparation for new turn lanes onto Rosener Road and Commonwealth Drive.

While this work is being done, Malone explained, the median crossover will be closed to traffic to provide more safety in the one lane work zones. The crossover will remain closed until it is removed and the new underpass is fully open to traffic. While the construction continues there will still be right on and right off access for both Rosener Road and Commonwealth Drive.

Highway officials are urging motorist to use extreme caution while driving in the work zone located just north of the Leadington interchange. Drivers are urged to slow down to the posted speed limits and be alert to the presence of workers and equipment in that area. Warning signs designed to warn motorists have been posted in both directions from the construction zone.

The project, being carried out at cost of $1,061,000, includes construction of a short east-west connector road that will loop under the U.S. 67 overpass that crosses over Route O and Koen Creek. The connector road will take the place of the at-grade median crossover between Rosener Road and Commonwealth Drive, which is being closed permanently.

The connector road, along with right on and right off access to the highway, will continue to provide motorists with access to businesses and residences on both sides of U.S. 67 in that area.

Malone indicated construction of the new intersection configuration is expected to be completed by late this summer.

The reconfiguration of the intersection is part of MoDOT’s efforts to upgrade U.S. 67 throughout St. Francois County. The goal of the transportation agency is to eliminate at-grade crossovers and thus improve safety conditions for motorists.

The intersection at Rosener Road and Commonwealth Drive has been the scene of numerous serious traffic accidents over the years, some of them fatal.
