Pre-school continuing long-time tradition

Once again the Growing Room Pre-school program at Memorial United Methodist Church is signing up students for another year. It’s a practice which has been done for the past 45 years.

Becky Worley will serve this year as the Pre-K director for the preschool. She’s excited about what the new school year will hold for all the young students. “We’re completely restructuring the curriculum to have more hands-on learning, and an emphasis on phonetic awareness. Our goal is for the students to have a good basic foundation for kindergarten,” Worley said earlier this week.

Lanell Sanders will be heading up instruction in the program. She started teaching at Growing Room in 2004. Worley arrived this year after several years at Truman Kindergarten Center as a resource instructor.

The preschool program teachers a Bible-based but non-denominational criteria for ages 3 through kindergarten. They have an 8-to-1 student to teacher ratio with a maximum of 32 students.

Classes run either Monday, Wednesday and Friday; or Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Cost includes a $60 application fee and monthly enrollment ranging from $70 to $90.

“You don’t have to be Methodist for your children to attend,” Worley explained. “And we still have openings.”

The upcoming year should include several fundraisers used to purchase materials, and field trips including the city firehouse, library and more.
