Timely hitting and defense keep Knightettes perfect

FARMINGTON – The Farmington softball team remained unbeaten and collected its third conference win on Thursday, riding a big first inning and several strong defensive plays to a 7-0 final at home over Potosi.

Natalie Sago gave up three singles in three different innings for a total of nine hits, but escaped trouble with the help of a key double play and an error-free performance by the defense behind her. Sago struck out three batters in the complete-game shutout.

The two teams finished with identical hit totals, but five consecutive Knightettes (5-0) reached base to begin the bottom of the first inning.

The bases quickly loaded when infield hits by Sago and Erica Fitzgerald followed a lead-off walk to Kristen Hayes, and Molly Currington delivered a two-run single past third base to put the Knightettes ahead.

After Marissa Hoehn loaded the bases again with a bloop-hit to left, Fitzgerald scored on a dropped fly ball in center field. Tasha Hamlett capped the inning with a squeeze bunt to score Currington for a 4-0 lead.

Potosi (2-3) responded with back-to-back singles by Liz Stewart and Amanda Boyer to start the second inning, and Jaclyne Pratt loaded the bases with a bullet up the middle with two outs, but Sago induced an easy ground out back to the mound.

The Lady Trojans began the third frame with three straight hits, but again could not capitalize. With runners at first and second, Emily Morgan singled into center, but a strong throw from Hoehn cut down Robin Pashia at home. Currington then alertly threw the ball to third in time to retire a sliding Brittany Chazelle.

Currington continued on her blistering pace at the plate with a perfect 3-for-3 day, including a laser over the left-center fence with one out in the home half of the third. The home run made the score 5-0, and was the second in as many games for the junior catcher.

Hayes drove in the next Farmington run with a ground out in the fourth, and capped the scoring with a RBI single in the sixth to bring in Sonya Galloway.

Potosi mounted its last scoring threat with three two-out singles in the fifth, but only after being robbed of hits by Megan Brann with a stretching grab deep in right field, and Hayes with a nifty catch on a liner up the middle.

Boyer led the Lady Trojans at the plate by going 2-for-3, and Pashia pitched all six innings in the loss, two days after tossing a no-hitter against Fredericktown. Potosi committed two defensive errors.

Farmington will compete in the North County Tournament on Saturday, beginning with a 10 a.m. battle with Salem. Potosi will host Hillsboro in non-conference action on Tuesday.
