Cats fall to DeSoto

The Blackcats Football Team fell to 0-2 with a 39-15 loss, Friday night at DeSoto.

DeSoto scored first, as Evan Jennings ran five yards to paydirt with 8:30 to play in the first quarter. Dragons Quarterback Robert Martucci ran in the 2-point coversion.

Neither team was able to score the rest of the first period and most of the second. Finally, late in the second, Jennings scored from eight yards out. Martucci hit Kevin Biasch for the 2-pointer and its was 16-0 with 21 seconds left in the half.

The same combination scored the only points of the third quarter. Jennings ran in his third touchdown from nine yards out, and Martucci hit Baisch for the conversion. It was 24-0 with 1:24 to play in the third.

Martucci threw a 31-yard towndown pass to Travis Downs and the pair combined for the coversion to make it 32-0 with 10:07 to go in the game. Sixty-seven seconds later Jennings scored from 28 yards out on his final carry of the game. The largest cheer of the game came when the Dragons’ Bree Lewis scored the PAT. Her kick made it 39-0 with nine minutes to play.

Brandon Brown got the Cats on the board with a 64-yard touchdown run. Ryan Sawyer kicked the PAT. Matt Algier scored for the Cats on a five-yard run with 40 seconds to go.

On offense, the Cats were led by Brown’s 64 yards rushing. Sawyer had 12 carries for 51 yards. Wesley Sharp completed six of 14 passes for 57 yards. Sawyer and Chase Dunham had two receptions each. Kaleb Francis had one.

Jennings led the Dragons with 19 carries for 121 yard and four scores. Martucci completed 11 of 15 passes for 93 yards and a score.

Dallas McDowell led the Cats with seven solo tackles. Brown, Garett Cook, and Chris Smith each had six.

The Cats play their home opener, Friday, against New Madrid.
