Program helps adults ease into college

Adults interested in beginning or returning to college are invited to attend a free Returning Learner’s Workshop at Mineral Area College in Park Hills from 9-11 a.m. Nov. 9 in the Fine Arts Building Room 104.

For adults who need a new direction in life, the key to success is often career training, according to Nancy Wegge, MAC coordinator of Returning Learners.

“The goal of the Returning Learner’s Workshop is to provide career information, enrollment assistance and preparation for the college experience,” she said. Wegge said the idea of the workshop is to help these new students get their questions answered and to help ease their anxiety before they enroll.

The program will cover such issues as balancing the demands of school, work and family and increasing self-confidence, and setting goals that get you what you want in life. The workshop also provides information on career programs and “brush-up” courses.

Sources of money to pay for classes and childcare will be reviewed. “Many adults may not realize that financial assistance is available for adults who enroll in college classes part-time,” Wegge said.

Adults who want to explore college possibilities are welcome with no obligation to enroll in classes. Adults who do decide to enroll will have the opportunity to complete an application.

There is no cost for the workshops. Registration is suggested by contacting Wegge at 518-2255 or Marcy Asher at the Fredericktown campus at 573-783-7932.
