Health Center to offer free mammograms

Women who qualify may receive free mammograms at the St. Francois County Health Center thanks to a grant from the St. Louis Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The grant in the amount of $3,061 will provide 25 screening mammograms for women from 40 to 50 years old with low income. Appointments for the screenings at the center may be scheduled at any time by calling Nurse Practitioner Debra Hoehn at 431-1947.

The clinic serves women from the counties of St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Madison, Washington, and Jefferson. Recruitment will be through local health departments and the Show Me Healthy Women outreach workers.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, in 2002, almost half the women 40 to 50 years old in Missouri had never received a mammogram. The rates were higher for St. Francois County, Madison and Jefferson Counties.

Mammography is the best method available for diagnosing breast cancer at a stage when it can be most effectively treated. American Cancer Society Guidelines for early detection of breast cancer in women without symptoms beginning at age 40 includes: Annual mammogram, annual clinical breast exam and a monthly breast self-examination.

The St. Francois County Health Center is located at 1025 West Main in Park Hills.
