Ceremonies, activities honor local veterans

Friday is Veterans Day and federal, county and state agencies will be closed. Many cities will also close in observance of the day.

The VFW will hold a traditional Veterans’ Day ceremony at noon Friday at the St. Francois County Courthouse.

The ceremony will include a rifle salute and speeches by State Rep. Stephen Tilley, R-Perryville, and Farmington City Administrator Greg Beavers, who recently returned from Iraq.

Veterans are invited to a 2 p.m. dinner at the VFW headquarters on Karsch Boulevard.

West County School District will honor veterans a day early with lunch, dinner and a talking museum.

The elementary school students will serve lunch to invited veterans at 12:30 p.m., after which the veterans will read stories to children in classrooms. Students also will perform a talking museum. Participants will dress as famous people from history and will stand on milk cartons. When their &#8220button” is pushed, the students will talk about their character and his or her importance in history.

Veterans will head to the middle school for dinner at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The following afternoon, the Parent – Teacher Committee will hold a chili dinner for all veterans at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the elementary school.

Mineral Area College Student Government will host a short program and reception to honor veterans at 10 a.m. Friday in the concourse Area of the Arts & Sciences Building. Speakers will be from the Mineral Area College Criminal Justice Department. Refreshments will be provided at the end of the program.

The Mineral Area Elks will treat disabled veterans from local nursing homes to dinner, and entertainment on Veterans Day. Beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, military helicopters from Warrensburg will fly in for veterans to see.

Members of the Junior ROTC in Farmington High School will serve breakfast to veterans on Friday. The Farmington R-7 School District will offer breakfast to any veteran of the armed services or current military at the campus of their choice.

Breakfast runs from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. at all campuses except the high school, which will serve from 7:30 – 9 a.m. ROTC members will escort veterans to the cafeteria and serve them their meals if desired.

The Bismarck VFW Post 6947 and Ladies Auxiliary will hold a Veterans Day Service at the Bismarck Veterans Memorial on East Main Street at 10 a.m. on Friday. All veterans are encouraged to take part and the public is invited.

The Central School District will hold a special program in honor of Veterans Day at 8:30 a.m. on Friday at the high school auditorium. At 8 a.m. refreshments will be available for veterans prior to the program. All veterans are encouraged to attend.

The American War Mothers will hold a program at 10 a.m. Friday in front of the Park Hills Senior Center. The organization will lay a wreath in honor of Veterans Day.

Park Hills city offices will be closed on Nov. 11 for Veterans Day. Trash service normally scheduled for Friday will take place on Thursday.

Farmington city offices will be closed for the holiday. Schools will be open.

Bonne Terre city offices will be open.

Leadwood city offices will be closed for the holiday. However, West County schools will be open.

The Bismarck City Hall will be closed on Friday in honor of Veterans Day. The Bismarck School District will not be in session on Friday.

The Desloge City Hall will be closed on Friday.

The Leadington City Hall will be closed on Friday.
