Sponsors are needed for foster children

Foster children in four counties will gather in Leadington on Dec. 13 for the ninth annual Foster Children’s Christmas Party, sponsored by the Park Hills-Leadington Chamber of Commerce.

Nearly 140 foster children in St. Francois, Washington, Ste. Genevieve and Madison counties are invited to the party from 6-9 p.m. at Elizabeth Hall Banquet Center, 210 Woodlawn Drive, Leadington. This year’s them is Madagascar.

Children will participate in crafts, coloring, and games. Pizza will be served, and children may watch movies and have their pictures taken with Santa. Several other special guests are also expected to make an appearance, including Mrs. Claus, elves, clowns and a magician. Foster children may choose one unwrapped gift and will receive a goodie bag with numerous trinkets, fruit and candy. Each child will receive a present from a sponsor to be opened at Christmas.

However, sponsors are still needed for 44 children. Of those, 20 children under the age of 12 need a gift, including nine under the age of 2. The remaining 24 children will receive Wal-Mart gift cards. The Chamber’s goal is to provide each child with $75 in gifts from their wish list or give them gift cards.

Sponsors who cannot afford a $75 gift or card are asked to contribute what they can. Any donation is appreciated, said Tammi Burns, the Chamber’s executive director.

Anyone who would like to sponsor one or more of the remaining children or will help with the party is asked to call the Chamber office at 431-1051.

Sponsors who &#8220adopt” a child for the party are asked to bring the present or gift card to the complimentary Sponsors Luncheon at noon Dec. 13. The Central High School Swing Choir will perform during lunch. Reservations are requested by calling the Chamber.

Gifts should be unwrapped and placed in one large black garbage bag per child. The bag should be labeled only with the child’s identification number. Separate bags should be used for each child, even those in the same family.

Wrapping paper may be included with the gifts. Foster parents will take the gifts home and wrap them for Christmas.

Sponsors who are unable to attend the luncheon may drop the gifts off at the Chamber Office, 5 Municipal Drive, or at Special Memories Bridal Shop above Elizabeth Hall. Those who cannot deliver the gifts may call the Chamber for pickup.
