Bulldogs, Dragons to play for consolation trophy

PARK HILLS – The West County Bulldogs and the Hillsboro Hawks met in the consolation semi-finals on Thursday in the 50th Annual Bob Sechrest, Jr. Christmas Tournament. West County took an early lead in the first quarter, and prevented the Hawks from a possible comeback for a 42-33 win.

The Bulldogs scored 10 straight points early in the contest for a 12-2 lead. Chris Mosier and Tyler Stacy both knocked down a three during the run. Brad Zeigler countered with a jump shot before the end of the quarter.

West County extended their lead to 21-9 on a three by Mosier, but Hillsboro answered with a 10-2 run which included a couple of threes by Adam Ethier. Sam Luebbers knocked down a jump shot before the end of the half for the Bulldogs. West County held a 25-19 edge.

The third quarter was a low-scoring one, but the Hawks slightly outscored the Bulldogs 9-7. Brandon Glore and Mosier recorded a three for their respective teams.

Glore later drained another three in the fourth quarter to pull his team within four points. However, Hillsboro missed two free-throw attempts, and they turned the ball over after they took a time-out. The Hawks tried to get the ball back, but they were called for several fouls. West County drained five free throws to secure victory.

Mosier finished with a game-high 17 points with three shots from three-point range. Luebbers and Ethier both had 10 points for their respective teams.

De Soto 68, Arcadia Valley 54

The De Soto Dragons pulled down several defensive rebounds and prevented the Arcadia Valley Tigers from second chances in scoring. The Dragons came out ahead 68-54.

De Soto scored the first eight points of the game. Jake Huskey had six of those points, and T.J. Greenlee added the other two. Arcadia Valley’s Logan Smith knocked down a three, but the Dragons held a small 14-9 edge after the first quarter.

A putback from Walter Spitzmiller and a lay-up by Jake Yarbrough narrowed the deficit to one point, but De Soto went on a dominating 15-2 scoring run for a 29-15 contest. Tyson Davis posted eight of those points, and Jeremiah Garrett added a three pointer with a pair of free throws during the drive. De Soto’s Grant Gannon added a three before the end of the half, and the Dragons held a 34-19 lead.

De Soto allowed the Tigers to score only five points in the third quarter. The Dragons’ offense was also successful as they added 18 points on the board for a 52-24 lead at the end of the quarter. Justin Madden and Huskey both had six points in the third quarter.

Arcadia Valley came through with a 6-1 scoring run, but De Soto still maintained a comfortable 59-33 advantage. Late in the game, Dereck Wilson scored eight consecutive points, and he later added four more, but his late-game efforts proved to be too little too late.

Wilson finished with a game-high 16 points, and Jack Franklin added 12 for Arcadia Valley. Huskey led the Dragons in scoring with 14.

West County and De Soto will play for the consolation championship today at noon. The Tigers will visit West County on Tuesday for a conference contest.

Ste. Genevieve 68, Valle 35

CPE GIRARDEAU – The Ste. Genevieve Dragons had the Valle Warriors at their mercy in their second round game of the Saxony Lutheran Tournament and dealt them a 68-35 loss.

John Laird was 3-4 from three-point range to lead the Warriors with 11 points. Garrett Meyer was tops in rebounding with nine boards, Adam Hermann pulled down seven.

The Warriors shot poorly fromthe field, but even worse from the free-throw line where they were 3-16 compared to the Dragons’ 9-12. Ste. Genevieve’s win was heir second in the tournament and it earned thm the right to play in the championship game tonight against St. Vincent. Valle will play Zalma this afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
