Farmington sweeps both sides of conference track meet
FARMINGTON — The MAAA Conference track meet was held on Friday at Haile Memorial Stadium and when the last of the 36 events was concluded, the Farmington Knights and Knightettes were winners of their respective divisions.
Both teams had their challenger. The Knightettes had claimed five first-place medals in individual events to post a team score of 180 points. The Ste. Genevieve Hunters were their nearest competitor also with five first place finishes, but would come up short with 158.5 points. Potosi won first in four events, North County won two and Central and Fredericktown claimed one gold medal each
On the boys side, the meet was not decided until the last event. Farmington had swept most of the short distances to gain the early lead, but Potosi came roaring back in the longer distances to make a contest of it. Both teams won seven individual events each.
When the 4×400 meter relay, the last event of the day, was run, Potosi needed to win first place (10 points) to tie the Knights, but the tie was brief since less than two seconds later, Farmington’s fourth man of their relay team crossed the finish line giving the Knights eight points for second place, the margin with which they won the meet.
North County won two of the boys events and Central and Fredericktown won one each. Team points are awarded through eighth place
