Council discusses smoking ban

FARMINGTON — Council members will take up some topics likely to raise passions when they meet for their monthly work session this evening.

The group will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the basement of Long Memorial Hall. Items up for consideration include a vote regarding placing a city-wide smoking ban in public places on the April ballot, and making changes to the city’s building codes.

Several public hearings will start the work session. Most deal with land matters to allow for development and improvements. A hearing on the smoking ban vote will be the final topic taken up before the council moves on to old and new legislation.

Members are set to hear of an ordinance which would ease the way for new business owners to occupy existing commercial buildings. A second bill would form a nine-member committee to make suggestions on building codes and serve as an advisory committee.

A separate board will be formed to serve as an advisory body for the municipal airport.

A public participation time will be held following the introduction of all legislation.
