MAC to register voters Wednesday

Mineral Area College Student Government Association is sponsoring Voter Registration at the college’s Park Hills campus from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the Arts & Sciences Building’s Concourse Area.

The public is invited to visit the campus to register to exercise their right to vote, as well. All that’s needed is a driver’s license, government-issued I.D., or a current utility bill with the person’s name and address. Informational material regarding the college’s ballot initiative will also be available at the March 5 voter registration event.

Student Government Association works with the St. Francois County Clerk’s Office to hold voter registration each fall to coincide with its Constitution Day celebration, and has often held it in the spring, as well.

Debbie Lee, SGA advisor, said community service projects such as voter registration make the Student Government members more aware of elections and issues that otherwise may not be noticed by them or their peers.

“Each year, the SGA sponsors a Veteran’s Day celebration and after the students hear the speeches the veterans, they feel a little more drawn to becoming more involved in the decisions of our government, and becoming part of the voting public. They want to have a say in what is happening around them,” Lee said. “That’s why it’s important we give the students an opportunity to hear the issues and to register to vote on them. “

She said the SGA always looks forward to helping the County Clerk’s Office register new or relocated voters.
