AmeriCorps Volunteer begins year of service in Fredericktown
In February 2008, the City of Fredericktown began sponsoring an AmeriCorps VISTA, Shanna Sorg.
What is an AmeriCorps VISTA? AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service and is based on the American ideal of service. It calls upon Americans of all ages, races, and faiths to contribute in meaningful ways to their communities to fortify the civic connections that make us a strong nation; to serve one another. VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) is the only branch of the AmeriCorps programs that foucses exclusively on fighting proverty. VISTA members focus on building capacity in organizations and communities. VISTA members totally immerse themselves in their communities and projects – seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
Shanna was sworn in for her 365 days of service February 22, 2008 in Alberqueque, New Mexico at the VISTA pre-service orientation along with her Supervisor Jim Dismuke, the Economic Development Director for the City of Fredericktown. Since then she attended numerous training events, focusing on entrepreneuship and community development. The main goal of the Fredericktown VISTA project is to promote and support existing and aspiring entreprenuers.
