Lady Cats split with North County, Central
The Lady Cats Basketball Team dropped a tight conference contest at North County, Wednesday, January 21.
The Raiders won the game, 64-59. North County took the early lead, scoring 14 points in each of the first two quarters. The Cats scored 11 and eight, respectively, and trailed 28-19 at halftime.
In the third quarter, FHS chipped away by consistently feeding the basketball in to Lauren Henderson, who hit a pair of short jumpers along the baseline, and Megan Moser, who closed the gap to four points with a put back.
The Cats entered the final period trailing just 41-37, but North County scored six quick points. It was 52-39 with 5:36 remaining. Kylie Oertel sparked the Lady Cats scoring ten straight points, capped by an easy layup after Mariah Korokis stole a rebound. Allison McDowell then cut the deficit to 56-54 with her first of two three-pointers in the final minute. North County was able to seal the victory from the free throw line, however, finishing 30-for-38 at the line.
Fredericktown was perfect on 14 total free-throw attempts, including 10-for-10 from Oertel, who led the Cats with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Henderson gave the Lady Cats a second double-double with 16 points and ten boards. McDowell had nine points, Moser added eight, Brianna Denman had four and Liz Laut had two.
Thursday night, January 22, the Cats topped Central, 52-36, in Park Hills.
Fredericktown (8-7) built an 18-point advantage through three quarters after taking a 23-12 margin into the break.
Henderson paced the Lady Cats with 18 points. Oertel finished with eight, and McDowell and Haley Stevens added six each.
