Lady Cardinals battle to overtime win
COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA — The Mineral Area College Lady Cardinals were outrebounded and also outscored on the perimeter, but despite trailing by eight points at the half which they made up in the second half, the Lady Cardinals blew the game wide open in overtime for an 83-75 win over the Iowa Western Lady Reivers.
Taking the early lead in the overtime period, the Lady Cardinals made 7-8 free throws down the stretch, while their defense held Iowa Western to only one field goal (1-11).
Caitlin Shadbolt led the team in scoring with 21 points and shared rebound honors with LaShayla Bell with 10 boards for a double-double. Bell finished with her own double-double with 17 points.
Gretchen Gaskin made two of her three-point attempts to also close out with 17 points, and Briley Milfeld had two threes to finish with 10 points on the night.
Mineral Area (16-9) had only five threes to Iowa Western’s nine, but they made up for it at the free-throw line, scoring 20 to the Lady Reivers 12.
The win keeps Mineral Area in second place in Region 16 with a record of 6-2, and they will play next on Saturday at Moberly in a doubleheader with the men.
