FARMINGTON — The Farmington Knights shut out the St. Pius Lancers 9-0 on Wednesday to open their 2009 tennis season.
It’s always nice to start out with a win and to finally be hitting the ball to someone other than ourselves,” said Farmington coach Andrew Canter during his team’s opening meet.
The Knights were only pushed by the Lancers in two of the singles matches, which Coach Canter noted as very different than past years.
“Before we would have 8-0 scores across the board,” said Canter crediting the Lancers with better play. The Knights recorded only two shut-out matches in the meet.
Drew Fuemmeler and Pierre Pujol shut out Ryan Hermann and Jon Wilson in the No. 1 doubles match. Eric Fuemmeler and David Pang were 8-4 winners over Peter Hanula and Cooper Bacon in No. 2 doubles and Justin Gray and Vee Patel combined for an 8-1 No. 3 doubles victory over Philip Canada and Luke Roubidoux.
Eric Feummeler’s No. 1 singles match was the last match of the day and he made it short with an 8-1 over Bacon in 20 minutes flat.
Pujol gained a 4-1 lead on Hanula in No. 2 singles, but Henula fought back to make it 5-4 before Pujol won out 8-6. Drew Fuemmeler posted an 8-0 shut out of Hermann in No. 3 singles.
Wilson was just off by a service break for the entire match as Gray was able to hold on for an 8-6 in No. 4 singles. Pang defeated Canada 8-2 in No. 5 singles and Patel was an 8-1 winner over Sarah Kock.
Farmington will try to keep their undefeated season going with a meet in Charleston this afternoon.
