Cats shine on offense and pitching for lopsided win

FARMINGTON — Brady Brewen ran out of gas late in the fifth inning, but not before he had secured the win for the Fredericktown Cats in a Junior Babe Ruth contest with the Farmington Bruins. The Cats  gave their pitcher plenty of run-support in posting a 25-5 win.

Brewen gave up only two hits and no runs in his first four innings on the mound with three strike-outs and no walks. The Bruins (1-4) figured out his pitching in the bottom of the fifth, posting all five of their runs on three hits in their last at-bats. Bryant Barks took over in relief to get the last out.

Brewen had a super night at the plate as well, going 4-4 with a double and a triple to drive in eight runs and score four himself.

The Bruins pitchers struggled to find the strike zone, issuing 12 free passes to the Cats’ batters, but when in the strike zone, the Cats roughed them up with 14 hits. Coupled with seven errors the Cats sent 45 batters to the plate in the five-inning shortened game.

Garrison Douglas was the only Bruins runner to reach second base in the first four innings with a double in the fourth. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth Travis Dodson delivered his second hit (2-2) to drive in the Bruins first run. Brian Harman and Meyer drove in one run each in the inning.

The Cats scored six runs in the second with only two singles, but in the ninth they tallied seven hits to score nine runs, highlighted by Brewen’s two-run double and a three-run double by Parker Maize.

Christian Ayyargari was perfect for the night with five walks in his five plate appearances and scoring four runs. A.J. Forister was 3-4 and also scored five runs.

BANTAM LEAGUE

Explosion 16, Lightning 1

BONNE TERRE — The Bonne Terre Explosion took only three innings to defeat the Park Hills Lightning with a score of 16-1, due to the Bantam League’s 15-run mercy after three innings.

Tyler Murphy pitched all three innings for a six strike-out no hitter. Jake Sullens was 3-3 with two triples and five RBI, Tucker Smith hit a two-run homer and had three RBI, Jase Odle was 3-4 with two doubles and four RBI, and Noah Umfleet was 2-2 with a triple and one RBI.
