Prizes, safety activities and more Saturday
Families will be able to get car seat safety inspections, bicycle helmet fittings and more Saturday for safety month.
USA Drug is hosting the safety month event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at its Farmington location. A variety of of local emergency crews and groups are helping put on the event.
Participating in the safety day will be the Farmington Fire Department with a truck and child car seat safety inspections, Air Evac helicopter, St. Francois county Ambulance, Farmington Police Department with Stranger Danger and DARE, Farmington Housing Inspector about electrical safety in homes, Parkland Therapy will be fitting kids for bicycle helmets for $8, St. Francois State Park will be fingerprinting, an Internet and text safety presentation, Mineral Area Regional Medical Center will give out safety tips, USA Drug will give presentations on food and safety, the 4-H club will have tractors and explain farm safety, the St. Francois County Health Department will also be teaching children how to wash their hands properly, and a clown will hand out balloons.
“This project began with a list for each month and special activities. June is safety month and we decided to do something to promote it,” said Debbie Franklin, nurse at USA Drug.
Franklin contacted some area businesses about donating door prizes. They collected 468 prizes to hand out to kids. There are enough to try to make sure everyone has a prize.
“This will be a fun event for the kids,” Franklin added.
USA Drug will have the east parking lot blocked off from cars and will have all the activities in that section. Kids will be able to tour the vehicles every 30 minutes and have a chance to listen to each group about what they do in that specific area of safety.
