MABA nine year olds capture game one in district play
FRANKCLAY — The only mercy shown to the visiting Union All Stars in Friday’s opening game of nine-year-olds district play was the 10-run mercy rule, put into effect after three-and-a-half innings of play.
The MABA All Stars outhit Union 10-2, outfielded 2-3 errors and was outpitched with Trae Robinson striking out five batters for the win.
Robinson also provided the early offensive power hitting a three-run home run in the first inning for all the runs the All-Stars would need. Dillon Manion and Jared Jones supplied the baserunners for the home run with back-to back singles.
The All-Stars racked up five runs in inning two. Kenny Mahurin led off with a single and Jace Bland was hit by a pitch with the two making a double steal for scoring position. Briley Smith drove in one run with a grounder, Manion scored another with a single and Robinson picked up his fourth RBI with a single.
Holden Mayberry collided with two Union infielders in trying to leg out a triple. The throw to third was wild as Mayberry and the third baseman hit the dirt. Mayberry was able to recover and scamper home on the play.
Union’s only hits came in the first on a leadoff infield single by Dylan Schmidt, and a second infield single by Matt Kozemski in the second inning. Union’s only scoring threat was in the first when they loaded the bases with one out, but Robinson struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
The All-Stars scored three in the bottom of the third to cap off their 11-run game. A lead-off single by pinch hitter Austin Jarvis was followed by a double from the bat of Mahurin to drive Jarvis home and Briley Smith’s single scored Mahurin. Pinch hitter Cody Manion drove in the last run with a ground ball.
The two teams will go at it again today at 3 p.m. in the best of three tournament. The third game if needed will be on Sunday (see Tournament Schedules next page).
