FARMINGTON – Both teams faced elimination in the Missouri Babe Ruth 11 year olds Tournament in their game on Saturday between the Hallsville Braves and the MABA Nationals.
MABA pitcher Jake Wilson, with the help of a stellar defense behind him, made sure that it wasn’t his team as he spread out five Hallsville hits for an 11 -1 win in five innings.
Wilson did damage with his bat as well, going 3-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBI. Catcher Jarred Deal was 3-4 at the plate with a walk and scored three of the Nationals’ runs. Noah Skaggs for the Nationals and Drew Pickett for Hallsville were both 2-2.
Hallsville scored their lone run in the top of the fifth with pitcher Cole McGee being grazed with a pith to lead off the inning. Two wild pitches later McGee stood on third and with two outs, Cole Dinyer, after striking out his first two at-bats, delivered with a single to score McGee.
McGee had kept the game close for four innings with the score only 5-1 going into the fifth, but Wilson’s lead-off double led to the bases being loaded without an out, and three Hallsville errors in the inning allowed the Nationals to score six runs to close out the game.
Both teams opened up the game offensively, showing they had come to hit. Jabe McGee and Cole McGee hit two singles for Hallsville in the first inning and Brayden Blakemore drew a walk to fill the bases before Wilson struck out the next two.
The Nationals did a little better in their first at-bats with four singles and a pair of runs. Brett Hubbard led off the inning with a single, but went no farther than first on a fielder’s choice. Singles by Deal and Noah Skaggs were both rewarded with a two-RBI single by Wilson.
The Nationals scored two more in the second on a wild pitch and an RBI infield single by Skaggs. Wilson hit his first double to lead off the third, but was stranded there as Cole McGee fielded two grounders and got a fly ball to first to end the inning.
The Nationals scored one more run before the fifth-inning finale in the fourth inning. Deal singled and advanced to second on a wild throw to first, and pinch hitter Devin Savage drove a liner into left for the RBI.
The Nationals were scheduled to play Jackson at 8 p.m. Saturday night, still in a one-game elimination format.
