Hunters busy on weekend, MAC now 10-2
CAPE GIRARDEAU — Notre Dame High School in Cape held a volleyball and softball tournament simultaneously on Friday and Saturday with the Ste. Genevieve Hunters being the lone MAAA Conference representative in both events. Also in action were the Mineral Area College Lady Cardinals at the John A. Logan Tournament on Saturday.
Hunters Volleyball —
Only the host team stood in the way of Ste. Genevieve winning the tournament. After defeating Marshfield, 25-22, 25-20, on Friday evening, the Hunters took on the Lady Bulldogs in pool play on Saturday and were handed a 25-27, 22-25 loss. Needing a win against their last pool opponent, the Hunters recomposed to defeat Cape Central 25-23, 25-13.
Entering bracket play as second in their pool, the Hunters were able to edge out Perryille 25-21, 27-25. The win pitted the Hunter against Notre Dame for the championship.
After losing the first game to the Lady Bulldogs 25-12, the Hunters could have given up, but they didn’t. Instead, they pushed Notre Dame into overtime, finally falling 27-25.
Kristen Faulkner led the team in kills with 28 and assists with 33, and she also made 44 digs on defense. Laura Rhodes led in digs with 66 over the five games and she also had 21 kills. Elle Korenak led in service points with 28 and also had 20 kills and 39 digs. Gwendolyn Dallas made 62 digs and served 25 Hunter points, Liz Huck made 20 kills, and Sarah Steagall had 22 assists.
Ste. Genevieve, 3-3, will be back on the court this evening at Chester, Illinois.
Hunters Softball — Ste. Genevieve had its struggles on the diamond as they dropped all three of their contests in the Notre Dame Softball-fest. The Hunters committed five errors and lost 5-1 to Kelly in their closest game, then were outgunned offensively by Delta 10-2 in their second game on Friday with only three errors.
Saturday the error bug continued with five miscues against Oran for a 9-3 loss.
Alicia Viox had a nice tournament with the bat as she collected four hits with an inside-the-park home run against Delta. Natalie Diesel, Becky Hermann and Erica Burney had two hits apiece in the tournament, and Stephanie Finley, Laura Kemper and Peyton Tripp had one hit each.
MAC Volleyball —
The Mineral Area College Lady Cardinals kept their hot start of the season going as they played in the John A. Logan Tournament and lost only one game in the three matches they played. On Saturday. MAC downed Shawnee 26-24, 25-21, 25-22, in their opening game, and hen defeated McKendree in straight games as well, 25-16, 15-18, 25-19.
The Lady Cardinals fell to John A. Logan, 22-25, in the opening game of their match, but uprighting themselves in game two to pull out the overtimer 30-28, Mineral Area dominated the rest of the way for scores of 25-13, 25-19.
MAC, 10-2, will play its first conference game on Wednesday at home against Jefferson College. Starting time is 6:30 p.m.
