Medical examiner rules death a homicide
The death of a Ste. Genevieve resident who disappeared has been ruled a homicide by the Jefferson County Medical Examiner. The autopsy report showed Chester A. Scherer died of stab wounds.
Scherer, 53, was reported missing to the Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff’s Department on Aug. 11. He had been seen that day at a party in rural Jefferson County near De Soto.
On Aug. 31 his body was found in a ravine in an area near Upper Plattin Road and Highway 110. The body was determined to be that of Scherer. An ensuing investigation determined that Scherer was last seen in Ste. Genevieve County on Aug. 7 in a Dodge Durango. That vehicle was spotted in St. Louis later that day and on the following day. On Aug. 10 it was found burned in a south St. Louis neighborhood.
