Potosi routs Dexter in regional round
POTOSI — Touchdowns on seven straight first-half possessions helped the unbeaten Potosi football team notch its first state-playoff victory since 1992 on Wednesday night.
Senior Brandon Bourbon broke his own single-season rushing record while scoring on three lengthy scampers, as the second-ranked Trojans dissected Dexter 56-20 in a Class 3 regional contest.
Bourbon erupted for 254 yards on just seven carries, including an explosive 52-yard sweep on the second play from scrimmage. Running lanes for Potosi (11-0) became increasingly spacious behind a physical offensive line.
Fullback Dylan Wyrick immediately rumbled 14 yards following an errant punt snap by the Bearcats, then scored the 2-point conversion for a 14-0 advantage. Wyrick finished the night with 87 rushing yards.
Dexter (4-6) botched a second punt and struggled to secure the football on numerous occasions. Five dropped passes prevented a formidable aerial attack from establishing much consistency.
Potosi converted a fake field-goal attempt from the Dexter 6 when Garth Rogers plunged across the goal line on an end-around, and enjoyed a 28-0, first-quarter lead after Bourbon sprinted 47 yards down the right sideline.
Quarterback Matt Marler attempted only six passes for the Trojans, but connected on touchdown strikes of 19 yards to Wyrick and 20 yards to Tanner Glore during the second quarter.
Dexter saw its most promising drive of the first half stall when Rogers made a leaping interception at the Potosi 2. Bourbon was untouched while racing 72 yards two plays later, and the Trojans took a 49-0 margin into intermission.
Linemen Robert King and Chris Kelly recorded nine and eight tackles, respectively, and Dylan Eye added another interception for a Trojan defense that yielded just 47 total yards before halftime.
King sacked Bearcats quarterback Ben Mills during a three-and-out series to begin the third quarter, and Potosi capitalized on excellent field position with a 25-yard touchdown run by senior Deondre’ Green.
Mills was 11-of-30 overall for 166 yards, and hit Ryan Windham from 10 yards out to break the potential shutout with 11:18 remaining.
Gary Summers netted two late touchdowns on five total receptions for Dexter, including a 28-yard scoring grab as time expired. Wesley McCollough paced the Bearcats on the ground with 57 yards.
Potosi will travel to New Madrid (8-3) for a sectional game on Monday night. The Trojans posted a 39-6 home triumph over the Eagles in week 3.
