It’s like coming home

Alumni of Farmington High School have set another meeting date of Dec. 15 to continue planning for the 50th anniversary of homcoming celebrations in the district.

“We wanted to do something for the 50th year of homecoming,” said Ardie Henson, one of the organizers. The meeting is for all alumni before and after 1960, when homecoming began as it is known today. The group would like graduates before 1960 to come and include information on the carnival that was held each year. The carnival was how the school celebrated homecoming prior to that time.

The group plans to showcase the past homecoming queens, first football team and the teams throughout the years. They are looking for former cheerleaders, band members and others who were involved in the football games as part of the “Golden Celebration.”

Henson added that all past alumni can consider this an invitation to join in for next year’s festivities. Organizers are asking former sports players, band and band auxiliary members, cheerleaders and pep club, and past homecoming queens to give their input on the celebration.

The date for next year’s homecoming will not be announced until February when district placements are announced. Farmington Athletic Director Pat Burns said there will be at least five home games next year.

The group plans to hold a celebration for Homecoming night and include students from the past and present. The group also discussed a commemorative brochure to highlight Homecoming queens, football players and cheerleaders from the last 50 years.
