Two French Village residents are facing charges after police say 23 pounds of marijuana was mailed to a Bonne Terre area woman.
Brian D. Schaefferkotter, 38, and Jonni S. Christensen, 48, were charged over the weekend in St. Francois County with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. The charge is a Class B felony.
Schaefferkotter has been charged as a prior drug offender. His bond was set at $150,000 while Christensen’s bond is set at $50,000.
According to the probable cause statement, a United States postal inspector received information that a package that was being processed through the Bonne Terre Post Office contained a controlled substance.
The package was suspicious because it weighed 27 pounds and had a hand-written label on it. The box had been sent from a city in Texas near the Mexico border which is a known “source city” for illegal narcotics.
Postal Inspector R.K. Davis obtained a search warrant to open the package. It contained 23 pounds of marijuana wrapped in several layers of cellophane which were covered in laundry detergent and Vaseline.
The inspector then delivered the package to the address on Berry Road north of Bonne Terre. Officers with the Mineral Area Task Force performed surveillance of the property until a search warrant was served.
When the officers went inside, they found that the woman who signed for the package had set it near the front door. The woman said she called Schaefferkotter to let him know the package had arrived.
She said Schaefferkotter and Christensen had asked her to receive a package, which she was told contained pictures.
The two men showed up at her residence and were arrested. Schaefferkotter told police the package and the contents inside were his.
