Washington County man dies after fall from cliff

POTOSI — The Washington County Sheriff’s Department is still calling the death a man found dead at the foot of a cliff in Washington State Park an accident. The incident occurred late Friday afternoon. Sheriff Andy Skiles identified the body as that of Christopher Humphrey, 49, Potosi.

Police records indicate emergency workers were dispatched to the state park near the Jefferson County line at 4:20 p.m.

“We believe he (Humphrey) was there for a little while before he was found,” Skiles said. “We are not exactly sure what caused his fall. It’s still under investigation.”

The base of a cliff overlooks the Big River. The river skirts the northern edge of the park. Skiles estimated Humphrey’s fall to have been about 120 feet.

Humphrey was pronounced dead at the scene. The recovery of the body was handled by members of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Potosi Fire Department and De Soto Rural Fire Department.
