Lady Bulldogs sparked by 31-0 run

BISMARCK — Junior guard Katie Gettinger netted 23 points Monday night on an efficient 10-of-13 shooting, and Small-School champion West County cruised past Kingston 61-21 in the first round of the MAAA Tournament.

Paige Forshee added 12 points and Courtney Richards made five steals for the fifth-seeded Lady Bulldogs (15-3), who generated a 31-0 run after Kingston junior Misty Jo Guenther split two free throws.

Gettinger buried a sudden 16-footer and converted her own steal into a 3-point play midway through the opening quarter. Two second-chance baskets from Lauren Callahan completed the lengthy scoring outburst.

Guenther was a glaring bright spot for the Lady Cougars (0-13) with 10 points and 13 rebounds overall. Her 3-pointer began the third quarter after Kingston entered the intermission trailing 39-7.

Freshman forward Tiffany Jones tallied six late points as West County amassed an 11-0 margin in bench scoring.

The Lady Bulldogs hope to avenge a December loss against North County when they battle in today’s 5:30 p.m. quarterfinal.
