Viburnum stops Warriors in district action

PERRYVILLE — A resurgent season for the Valle Catholic boys basketball team met its conclusion on Wednesday night.

Viburnum limited the Warriors to just four points in the second quarter, and pulled away down the stretch while committing only seven turnovers for a 58-37 semifinal win at the Class 2, District 4 tournament.

Skyler Westrup drained four big shots from beyond the arc and scored 18 points for the Blue Jays, who will face top-seeded New Haven in Friday’s championship game. Jackson Conaway and Brice Ruck had 16 points each.

Valle Catholic trailed 23-16 at halftime before yielding back-to-back threes to Conaway midway through the third quarter. Viburnum produced a 20-10 scoring margin in the fourth.

Ryan Hermann scored 10 points and junior classmate Jared Bruns added eight for the Warriors (15-12), who earned a share of their first conference title since 1998 last week.
