Farmers Market opens

The Ste. Genevieve Farmers Market will open for its 21st season at a new location today.

The market, which will be open from 7 a.m. to noon, is located at 600 East Market Street at the Knights of Columbus pavilion.

Although the growing season has begun, Carol Flieg, Ste. Genevieve Farmers Market Secretary, said cool, wet weather has affected the amount of early spring vegetables growers could harvest.

“There will be a limited supply of lettuce, spinach, green onions and radishes on opening day,” Flieg said. “In weeks to come, there will be a bigger supply of spring vegetables and other seasonal produce.”

In addition to locally-grown fruits, including strawberries, and vegetables, there will be farm fresh eggs, sweet potatoes, asparagus, pecan and walnut kernels, noodles, dumplings, homemade tamales, bread and butter pickles, relishes, home canned vegetables, preserves, fruit butters, jams, jellies, herb-flavored vinegars, bedding and house plants as well as homemade cakes, cookies and bread.
