Hawks offense ignites in late innings

FARMINGTON — After scoring only one run in the first three innings of their MABA Junior League game with the Arcadia Valley Chargers, the Farmington Hawks offense came alive, scoring 11 more runs in their final three innings at the plate for a 12-3 win on Tuesday.

A seven-run fourth highlighted the Hawks game, scoring five runs before the first out was recorded. Aaron Maize singled to lead off the inning with 11 batters to follow him to the plate in the inning. A single by John Barr and a hit batter that loaded the bases, set up the Hawks to advance one base at a time until a ground ball to first broke the chain.

A two-run single by Kevin Bullock capped off the inning which included four singles, four walks and a hit batter.

Hawks pitcher Jake Marshall struck out the first three batters he faced, but Levi Earnest and Austin Earnest rocked Marshall with back-to-back, fence-reaching doubles to start the second inning for the Chargers.

A single by Theron Crawford gave the Chargers a 2-0 lead, but the rally was halted with a Hawks catcher Aaron Maize throwing out Crawford at second on a steal attempt. Maize had a good day at the plate as well, going 3-3 with a walk.

Levi Earnest hit a second double in the fourth inning to send Hayden Helvey all the way to third after a lead-off walk. Helvey scored on a ground ball by Nick Inman to give the Chargers a 3-1 lead, after the Hawks scored an unearned run in the third.

Marshall threw a complete game striking out seven on the way, and only giving up one more hit in the last three innings, a double by Austin Earnest in the sixth inning.

The Hawks powered up in their final two innings at bat. No. 9 hitter Tommy Wilfong doubled to lead off the fifth, and was able to score on a single by Tristen Hastings, and Kevin Bullock hit a seeing-eye triple to lead off the sixth followed by singles off the bats of Maize, Barr and Kaylon Bryant for a three run inning.

Errors were minimal for both teams with the Chargers committing three and the Hawks one.
