Burglars steal back-to-school items

WASHINGTON COUNTY – The Washington County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a theft of items for a back-to-school campaign.

Investigators say the door at the Mineral Point Lions Club had been forcibly opened and several items were missing, including cases of soda, cash, personal hygien products, clothing, blankets, toys and school supplies.

The items were to be distributed to people in need.

No suspect has been identified at this time.

Moments before investigators were called to that scene, they had been called to the Mineral Point Head Start for a similar complaint. The door there had been forcibly opened as well, although further investigation did not reveal much additional evidence.

Police believe the two incidents may be related.

If you have information about the theft, call the Sheriff’s department at 573-438-5478.

The Mineral Point Lions plan to go ahead with their Back-2-School Festival Aug. 17 despite the thefts. Donations to replace the stolen items are being accepted.
