Blackcats’ rebounding ends Trojans tourney play
The Fredericktown Blackcats pulled down 38 rebounds to only 14 by the Potosi Trojans and the difference gave the Blackcats an upper edge in scoring as they pulled away in the second quarter of their consolation quarterfinal game of the Central Christmas tournament for a 73-49 win.
Only one-point separated the two teams at the end of the first quarter with Fredericktown holding the 15-14 edge after five lead changes. The Blackcats held the Trojans to only one lone field goal and a pair of free throws for quarter two.
Potosi’s Zack Adams ignited the Trojans scoring with a three to start the game. Adams would add one more before the end of the quarter and another in the fourth to finish with 11 points. Aaron Vinson also hit a three in the first quarter to begin a 15-point night in leading the Trojans’ scoring.
The Blackcats relied heavily on their 6’8” center Brock Mills who not only pulled down 16 rebounds in his three-quarters of play, but also had an extensive scoring game of 27 points which included a 9-12 night at the line where the Trojans often sent him in trying to combat his putback on the offensive boards.
Coming off the bench, Nick Oertel contributed 12 points, and starter Jake Korokis complemented Mills’ inside game with a pair of three-pointers to finish with 10 points.
Fredericktown will next face Viburnum on Thursday in a consolation semi-final game. Potosi will have a break until January 6 when they will return to the Fieldhouse to play Central in a conference game.
