BlueJays free-throw stops Dragons rush
The Ste. Genevieve Dragons tied the game at 5-5 midway through the first quarter, and they would tie it up again in the final seconds of the game before seeing a final free throw by Jackson Conaway end their hopes of continuing in the Central Christmas Tournament as the Viburnum BlueJays pulled out a 43-42 win.
The Dragons trailed 40-20 going into the fourth quarter, but stifling pressure on defense held the BlueJays to only three free throws in the quarter as Ste. Genevieve mounted its comeback. With 11 seconds on the clock, Kevin Johnson tied the score at 42-42 with a 10 footer for his only points of the game.
Just prior to Johnson’s shot, Brendan Weiler finished off a 20-point game with his third three-pointer.
Conaway’s free-throw concluded a 17-point game for the senior, and his trip to the line came when he was fouled when he trying to shoot after rebounding his own shot which gave him 12 rebounds in the game.
The BlueJays constantly maintained their lead throughout the game by means of a 7-13 three-point night. Jordan Conaway was good for four threes, and Brandon Hubbs had a pair.
Viburnum will play Fredericktown on Thursday, and Ste. Genevieve is off until January 6 when they will host North County.
