Rebels place ninth in Central’s 12-team tourney
PARK HILLS — The Central Rebels were host to 11 other wrestling teams on Saturday in their all-day tournament. Utilizing both gyms the tournament had eight of the 12 teams on the mats at all times except for a noon break between the pool and bracket play.
Hillsboro won first-place in the tournament, finishing 5-0 and besting Dexter 42-34 in the championship meet. Sullivan finished third, winning the third-place meet 48-33 over De Soto (See results and scores below).
The tournament was broken down into three parts. All twelve teams were divided into four pools with each team wrestling two duals in their pool. The best two teams in each pool were then placed in a bracket to determine the top eight finishes, and the other four were placed in a round-robin contest to determine the ninth through 12 places.
The Rebels placed ninth in the tournament by winning their tied match with Festus, 43-42, due to having more falls than their opponent. Central swept the 9th through 12th place finals.
Jordan Stirts (132/138) and Garrett Hagerty (152) both had a perfect 5-0 day with Hagerty recording two falls, and Richard House (106/113) was 4-0 with two falls.
Matt Streckfuss (182) and Justin McWilliams (220) were both 4-1. All four of McWilliams wins were by fall, and Streckfuss won three of his matches by fall. Jeremy Boyd (113) finished 3-1, and Calvin Langston (126) and Kyle Schwantner (138/145) were both 3-2 with Schwantner making two pins.
Spencer Jones (160) recorded two wins in his five matches, and Ryne Scherffius (132) lost his only match of the day.
