Weather wins Simpson Relays

FARMINGTON — After several delays for lightning being in the area, the Simpson Relays held at Farmington’s Haile Memorial Stadium was able to get underway on Friday afternoon, but before the meet was halfway over, lightning struck again, with all athletes having to take cover for a half-hour delay before the meet could be resumed.

The lightning continued and the meet was never restarted, and it will not be completed later, according to Athletic Director Pat Burns.

Only nine girls events and seven boys events were finished, and medals were rewarded for the events which managed to be completed.

Festus was in first place in the girls meet when it was halted, and Cape Central was in first in the boys meet, but there were no team awards since the meet was not finished.  

Festus took first place in five of the nine girls events with Breanne Bormann claiming three golds in the long jump, the high jump and the 100m hurdles.

Farmington’s team of Destinee Harris, Emily Harris, Miranda McKelvey and Mackenzie Weakley won first place in the 4×200 meter relay, and Candace Burr of Ste. Genevieve took first in the triple jump. Gretchen Koller of Valle Catholic won first in the 100m dash with a time of 13.57.

Both Cape Central and Jackson had two first place finishes in the seven boys events. Farmington’s Carl Wheeler took first in the 110m hurdles, and Gabe Meyer of Ste. Genevieve claimed first with a distance of 19 feet 11.25 inches in the long jump.
