Knights edge Valle by 1/2 point, complete MAAA track sweep

STE. GENEVIEVE — The Valle Catholic boys track and field team received the type of favorable start it desired while hoping to capture its first MAAA Conference championship in program history.

Seniors Andrew Bauman and Eric Meyer placed first and second in the shot put, and the 4×800 relay team won the initial boys race following a lengthy rain delay on the track Friday afternoon.

But standout Carl Wheeler posted three individual victories in the 400 dash, 110 hurdles and long jump, and Farmington edged the reigning Class 1 state champions by the slimmest possible margin to claim the title.

Monis Zereik swept both the 100 and 200 sprints, and Josh Thomas added a winning effort in the 300 hurdles as the Knights, compiled 138 1/2 points to the Warriors’ 138. Ste. Genevieve finished third with Central next.

The Valle boys were mostly propelled by their strong relay teams, winning each of those four events. But Tyler Wengert and Ollie Naeger contributed a 1-2 result in the pole vault, and Ryan Hermann had the top discus throw.

Central junior Maverick Scott earned top honors in the triple and high jumps. Jon Eunpu won the 1600 for Arcadia Valley, Tim Williams took the 800 race for North County, and Tyler Uhrich captured the 3200 for Ste. Genevieve.

Farmington celebrated an overall sweep with the girls accumulating 174 points for a comfortable win. The Knightettes picked up half of their eight individual event title by controlling the four relay races.

Destinee Harris set the pace in the 100 and 200 dashes with teammate Miranda McKelvey running second in each for Farmington. Taylor Brockmiller raced to victory in the high hurdles, and Mattie Bradley claimed first place in the long jump.

Alexa Kuenzel prevailed in the shot put for Valle, which was second in the girls team standings with 117. North County (104) and Ste. Genevieve (100) also tabulated triple digits.

The third-place Lady Raiders notched wins from four separate athletes — Megan Parks (400), Kuranda Horton (high jump), Ashley Dickey (pole vault) and Celeste Blum (discus).

Saga Barzowski represented Arcadia Valley with excellent distance running, taking conference titles in the 800, 1600 and 3200.

Ste. Genevieve senior Candace Burr was top finisher in the triple jump, and placed second to Potosi’s Ashleigh Carr in the 300 hurdles.
