Ironton closes pool due to multiple leaks

Ironton city officials have closed the municipal pool after it was learned that it was losing approximately 18,000 gallons of water per day from multiple leaks. The problem may not be fixable, at least by city employees. Mayor Bob Halket said the location of blueprints for the pool built in 1967 is unknown, if they even have them anymore.

The city spent a great deal of money last year updating the changing rooms, as well as sandblasting and repainting the pool.

Although the city’s board of aldermen will make the final determination, Mayor Halket said he would like to bring in a contractor to run cameras through the water lines to identify the location of the pipes so repairs can be made. He said the only other option would be for the city to build another pool — an expensive prospect in this tight economy.
