Sr. Legion Miners topped by Ste. Geneveive 4-3

STE. GENEVIEVE — Leadoff batter Alec Greminger finished 3-for-3 while reaching base five times overall, and Ste. Genevieve edged Park Hills 4-3 Monday night in Senior Legion baseball action.

Post 150 played errorless defense and broke a 3-3 deadlock on Alex Stoll’s ground out after Greminger walked and stole second base in the fourth inning.

Winning pitcher Wayde Roth and reliever Bryn Huck held the Post 39 Miners without a hit over the remainder of the contest. Roth allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five over six innings.

Dustin Raney added two singles in the victory. Ste. Genevieve stranded 11 runners and squandered chances to push across some late insurance before ultimately improving to 2-1 overall.

Park Hills reliever Dominic Eaton struck out three consecutive batters with runners at second and third in the sixth inning. Third baseman Brian Koppeis turned a line drive into an unassisted double play in the eighth.

But the Miners (1-0) could not generate a comeback threat against Huck, who retired nine of his 10 hitters faced to earn the save. Charging plays by Alex Rollhaus at third base and Greminger at shortstop closed the game.

A crazy bounce over the shortstop fueled a Ste. Genevieve two-out rally in the second, resulting in a RBI single for Raney. Greminger drove the next pitch into the left-field corner for a RBI double and 2-0 lead.

Post 39 starter Andrey Atkeson kept his team in close contention despite walking seven through five innings. A batter’s interference call erased one of three free passes in the opening frame.

The Miners opened the third inning with back-to-back infield singles from Dale Mosier and Garrett Manion, who each finished the night with two hits, and pulled within 2-1 on a fielder’s choice RBI by Kyle Harrison.

A RBI double from Broc Kreitler quickly restored a two-run lead for the host squad, but Post 150 left the bases loaded when Zak Turner fielded a ground ball and tagged first base with a diving stretch.

Park Hills enjoyed its best success against Roth in the fourth. Turner lifted a leadoff double to left, and advanced to third on a single by Justin Lashley.

Zach Manford made it 3-2 with a slow chopper, and Mosier followed with a tying RBI double to left-center.

Huck contributed a double and Tyler Greminger had two sacrifice bunts for Ste. Genevieve.
