Local Partnership to Help Area Job Seekers in Health Services Industry
MAC, Missouri Career Center Partner on MoHealthWINs Grant
Workforce and education entities of Southeast Missouri have announced that tuition assistance, short-term job training, and job placement services are available for qualified local job seekers in the health services industry. Assistance will be offered through a recently awarded Missouri Healthcare Workforce Innovation Networks (MoHealthWINs) Grant.
Mineral Area College is among the 13 colleges in the state of Missouri awarded federal funds from the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grants Program. The federal awarding agency is the Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.
Staff from Mineral Area College, the Missouri Career Center and Workforce Investment Board of Southeast Missouri recently met to discuss the immediate training needs of local unemployed, underemployed, low-skilled individuals, veterans and those people who have lost their jobs as a result of their jobs moving overseas.
The grant, titled MoHealthWINs, has allowed MAC to implement two new programs on campus to address the current and future workforce needs in the health services industry. Starting in October 2012, the community college will offer Maintenance Technician in a healthcare setting training program, and a Pharmacy Technician program.
The Pharmacy Technician program will be a 12-week program, designed for students who want to gain the skills and knowledge for an entry level position as well as prepare for the National Certification exam offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Consisting of lab training and classroom study, the class will meet Monday through Friday in the Continuing Education Building on the college’s Park Hills campus.
The second new short-term training program, the Maintenance Technician in a health care setting, is a certificate and stackable credential program. The first credential program offered will be the 200 Hour Maintenance Technology Certificate course which will start in October 2012. This new program offers training to both degree-seeking students (Associate in Applied Science in Industrial Maintenance) and students seeking a certificate only in the industrial maintenance field. The program provides hands-on skills training and e-learning opportunities in electrical, rotating machines, process control, fluid power and mechanical drives. An HVACR and Modularized Stationary Engineering certificate programs will also be offered beginning in spring 2013.
