Hunters shake up conference with win over Lady Raiders
BONNE TERRE — The North County Lady Raiders were undefeated in the MAAA Conference going into Thursday’s game with the 0-2 Ste. Genevieve Hunters, but a pitcher’s duel took place between the two teams and the Hunters emerged with a 2-1 victory.
Jessica Newburry held her own on the pitcher’s mound for North County as she struck out 12 batters and gave up only three hits and did not walk a batter. Megan Weiler also gave up only three hits for the win with 11 strike-outs and only one walk.
Fielding errors played a part in both team’s scoring. Emily Giesler singled and stole second in the fourth inning for the Hunters, and on a mishandled ground ball, she advanced to third. Giesler scored on a throw down to second attempting to catch Erica Burney on the steal. Jamie Viox singled to drive in courtesy runner Megan Hermann.
The Lady Raiders scored their lone run in the sixth inning on a single that resulted in two bases after an error in the outfield. Olivia Hall drove Robinson in from third with a single.
North County (5-1 and 3-1 MAAA) will travel to Fredericktown on Tuesday for their next game, and Ste. Genevieve (3-2 and 1`-2 MAAA) will host Potosi the same day.
